Rather than ADDING more memory, just REPLACE the memory you already have. The slots have 256 mb simms in them. Take those out and replace them with simms that have more memory.

You are correct since you have no open slots you will have to remove the memory you currently have there, and put in larger memory sticks. You could put in 2 1GB sticks if you want, it all depends on what you are planning to do with your computer and how much money you want to spend.

You have to get rid of the old memory. Try selling them to places that buy them.

You could put the 1GB instead of the 512MB but the laptop may not use the overage so you'd have made a bad investment right there.

i agree with craig. if crucial suggest 2x512 this may be the max your m/c can support. but always check with maker before upgrading memory as even in the same series the levels of support can vary among models. oh and by the way the max is usually per stick not per motherboard . so if you have a machine max of 1GB and two slots you have to use 2x512

You will save yourself plenty of frustration by contacting HP with your question.

The amount of memory that your system can use may be restricted by your motherboard. (not by how many slots, slot size, or pin count, but by the circuitry of the motherboard)

My Advice: You'll save yourself some trouble by asking someone (HP) who could be held accountable for any mistake.

If you find that your laptop's motherboard is capable of utilizing more than 1GB of memory, I would recommend visiting www.newegg.com for great deals on hardware.

Best of luck.
