Because of the rain. Water dissolves salt. All water heads downhill which winds up in the ocean. Some inland lakes that have no drainage into the sea are salty and getting saltier. An estimate that I read calculated that at the rate the salts were being washed into the seas, they must have been like fresh water about 10,000 years ago.
At about the time the mammoths were quick frozen( and NEVER unfroze).

I agree with Richard_CA.........it is the process of weathering. The sea is salty, and a lot of other things.
