What we call World Wars I and II in history today were both fought predominantly on the European continent. This was true of the Thirty Years Wars. These battles (1618-1648) ranged over central Europe particularly in the German provinces which were independent principalities at that time. Remember that Germany did not exist as a nation until after 1871. The devastation in these German areas was catastrophic. Perhaps one quarter to one third of the population died from the effects of war - primarily starvation and the usual diseases that attack a weakened population.
The ostensible reason for the conflicts was religion - Catholic vs Protestant - but it was also a play fro power and territory.
France for instance was Roman Catholic, but the French would aid the Protestant cause if there was something economic to be gained.
The Thirty Years War was essentially one of many wars fought in Europe to decide which group of Europeans would control the most territory and wealth on the continent. The Catholic Church based in Rome was also interested in wealth and power. The Church had become over-concerned with political power and wealth at that time rather than sticking to its spiritual role in European society.
