I am taking theater arts in high school. I love that class. I took it because i would like to get into acting. Sometimes our teacher gives us a game to play. We are given basic info or rule (sci-fi, comedy, drama, musical, etc) and we act it out. Basically you act out anything you like, it just has to relate to the rule. How can improve my skills at this? How can i quickly know what to act out? any advise?

It sounds like you are seeking to improve your improvisational skills more than your acting skills (not exactly the same thing). My main advice would be to just practice as much as you can - with a buddy, alone in front of your mirror, etc. Write some random topics and put them in a hat, then take out two and try to make something up that combines them. For example you could put in one genre (comedy, sci-fi) and one prop or theme (rabbits, bologna, hospitals, etc).

Here is a website you can visit for some tips and articles : http://www.pantheater.com/Articles/ImprovArticlesHP.htm.

Good luck!

Sigh, here we go again. I know the improv game is fun, but it is not acting as it is done on the stage and screen. I know the teacher thinks the class should be fun and all that, but it sure would be nice if it gave a little info about acting. The only way to improve one's skills as an actor is to be in plays, as many as you can get into. Now follow someone else's advice about improv. I disapprove of it as a way to teach acting.

Yes definetly....Its like the first step to improve ur acting skills...........Many programs and shows which are in search of actors and actresses select them on the basis of their acting skill,in which they are given a taskto act a particular scene of a movie...Then after acting they compare it with the original if they have done a good and a fair job they are selected...In india together with acting dance is also considered as part of acting

pretend that all the setting has changed. pretend that ur in a different place, different time, etc. and also pretend that ur in the situation. wat would u do if ur that character ur acting out. that would probably make it seem more realistic
