I'm light skin and she's dark and the look that other blacks gives us whenever we go out in public ranges from just staring to pure disgust, especially from light skinned black women. Why are we so caught up on shade as a race? I also had a conversation with some of the blacks at my job and all the guys said they'll NEVER date a women who's darker than them. My girl also says she wishes she was lighter. Don't they know that we all are black when it boils down to it?

for some odd reason here in this land where there are such a verity of skin color we all have our preference but i think its influenced by the media pretty much everything that is said to be good or pure is white. And we mostly associate bad or dirty with the color black. I call it a form of brain washing start paying close attention to TV the commercials especially and you will see how things are portrait based on color.

It depends on the people. Some would like lighter skin and some people want darker skin. For example, black people along with Asians use skin whitening creams (that are super dangerous and most of the time illegal) to get lighter skin and a lot of white people tan to look darker. I think it has to do with a personal perception of beauty because everyone's different (that's what makes the world go round) and I don't think there's anything wrong with people who do things like that if it's truly what they want in themselves and in a partner. Sometimes it has nothing to do with race at all. Just personal preference.

Sad, got to handle the problem at the root, which has been gone for a while. Only God can help. I'm dark skin & don't care rather I have a darker husband or a lighter, not that serious to me.

Black people have a severe self-hatred complex. There's always been this idea that "light skin" is better, unless of course you're a man. Then darker skin is ideal.

They've convinced themselves that they have "bad" hair and hair that resembles white people hair is "good". Basically they hate everything about themselves and it's a damn shame.

Many men won't marry a woman who's darker than them because they fear that their children will be dark. So I guess they want to kill off the darker black race. That's what it looks like anyway.

I'm dark-skinned and my husband is white. I know exactly what you're talking about.

OK, everyone's ranting on about this.

We are 'caught up on this' because the slavemasters got us 'caught up on this' by favoring his lighter skinned slaves (often his own children) over the darker skinned slaves.

Black folks, it took 400 years to get us here to this mess, and there is no 'undo' button. Gonna take a while. I'm 34 and i don't believe black america (at least a majority) will get back on track in my lifetime.

Folks from other countries can come here and succeed in a generation or two, but they also bring their own identities. Ours, unfortunately, is whatever the media tells us it is this year, and "wisdom" is out of season.

Peace.

1st thing I thought when I saw this question, was that everyone was going to make it a "black man's" issue. We didn't create colorism & there are plenty of black women who think this way. I've had girlfriends who had issues with having a baby with someone as dark as them.

It's a sad legacy of slavery and oppression. Only education from a young age, combating the racism instilled by many parents/families, will solve this type of issue.
