On Oct. 5, a pre-dawn U.S. raid on Khalis, a Shiite city north of Baghdad, killed 25 people when U.S. troops called in airstrikes after meeting a fierce barrage while hunting suspected smugglers of arms from Iran to Baghdad. Village leaders said the victims included civilians, but the military insisted the 25 killed were militants.

What percentage of innocent deaths is acceptable in order to create democracy?

I hear a lot about the "enemy hiding behind women and children" (I ignore remarks such as the enemy is a coward) and remind you that if a superior military force invaded the US and went street by street and house by house the same could be said. The enemy is after all fighting from his home.

Davcon1 remarks remind me that probably both the Bible and the Koran have some pretty dumb answers for the modern world to follow, if followed blindly and verbatim.

Sage's remarks are quite frightening. Gamla Joe, yes I agree the US should get out of Iraq - there will never be any peace as long as they are there thats for sure- but how to get out now thats the big question. Is Bush planning to leave that one to the Democrats?

Has it ever occurred to anyone that maybe the people there don't want a western-style democracy imposed on them? How many of you would like it if people from a foreign country with no knowledge or your religion, language, or culture invaded yours and tried to dictate the type of government you should have and how you should live your lives? You wouldn't like it. What makes some people think they would feel any differently?

Your absolutely right, we should pull out of Iraq and let them kill each other.

As for creating democracy, what this shows is that it is nearly impossible to create a democracy from the top down.

Almost every single successful democracy on earth was created because the people demanded it.

As long as the Arabs do not care they will have a dictator or a king that will rule over them.

perhaps Arabs are simply mentally incapable of creating a functioning democratic society.

No, not all Arabs are militants. I read the article on Yahoo News it was titled 9 children killed in US raid in Iraq. The loss of civilian life is tragic but it was not intentional either. Our troops do their best to minimize loss of civilian life. As we all should know it is impossible for there to be no civilian causalities especially when these cowards hide behind women and children.

Yes, just like all people with guns at home are going to go out and shoot a party full of people or a class full of schoolkids... note the heavy sarcasm.

No, of course their not. Its the rotten apple spoils the barrel. Most of them want to live quietly, like most caucasians, africans, chinese...

But its impossible to avoid harming civilians if the terrorists surround themselves with them.

Choice is 25 civilians or another 9/11? What do you do?

Any amount of deaths is acceptable when it comes to instilling fear in a country to conform to our ways and what we think is right and completely disregarding the actual citizens of that country by tearing it to shreds.
