I'm an Assitant Manager at a retail store and I work with two employees who both speak spanish and english fluently. Is it discrimination if they are speaking to each other, while on the clock, in spanish in front of me, since I do not personally speak spanish nor understand it? I believe it is but would like some other opinions. Maybe someone who knows the laws on that. Thank you :)

So knowledge of another, more comfortable language is discrimination now?

No, it is not discrimination until it reaches the point where they mock you openly or bring you problems to your job (e.g. get you fired)

It is not discrimination. However, some companies have company policies where English must be spoken at all times unless a customer requests a foreign language.

I have managed several bi-lingual and multi-lingual call centers and I personally never cared what language my employees spoke to each other. If they felt more comfortable speaking Spanish or Vietnamese or Russian then that was fine with me. They always spoke English when interacting with their English speaking co-workers and with me. It just wasn't an issue.

its not discrimination. i am a supervisor at a lighting company, and we have a lot of different cultures....asian, mexican, african, black, white, and german. they all speak english and their language. when they do it in front of me its no problem. they feel comfortable doing that because they can understand each other better the same as we do in speaking english. there is no law to stop them from speaking the language of their birth. it sucks because you want to know what they are talking about. I go through it everyday.

I AM sure it is not discrimination, although i am not a lawyer or familiar with law. It just like this situation that two friends are changing ideas secretly in front of you. So , you have no right to know what are they changing.A friend of mine who i met on interracialmatch.com told me that, you should completely believe other people if you want to get along with them in a good mood.

Well it is not a law as of yet, i would however, learn a little of their language and surprise them with it, makes them think twice to be talking.

It's not discrimination, it's just bad manners.
