Not the obvious lucky, like winning the lottery. More like when they refer to something in your personal life, be it a solid marriage, healthy kids, a good job, a nice house, or whatever. I know its only a figure of speech, and most people seem genuine in expressing that I should know to be grateful. Sometimes, though, from certain people, or they way a person puts it, makes me feel like they somehow think I am undeserving of what they feel is my good fortune. I'm not the type of person to really let anyone's opinions get to me, but this statement always makes me hesitate a minute before I respond.

Does anyone else feel this way when someone says to you "You're lucky to ________."? If so, how do you respond?

I can't say I get suspicious, but there have been times I have told the person calling me lucky that I also worked for my good fortune.

A line used in at least two movies (12 O'Clock High and James Cameron's Titanic) is "You make your own luck." To a very large extent I believe that is true. There are times that luck is at play, but more often it is effort that makes the luck.

And I am sure that you--like me--have worked plenty hard for your good luck.

Not at all.

I've been lucky my whole life. Not with money. But with things that some people only dream of.

Lucky because
I got a back seat ride on an F4 fighter jet
I ran a successful business and learned that its not my thing.
I've got photographs archived in the library of congress.
I've been published
I've won a writing prize
I lived on a sailboat and did some serious sailing for 6 years
I've done a lot of traveling
I've done most things in life I wanted to do
I've had two kids, one adopted, one my own.
I'm now living in a foreign country.
I've got a lot of respect from people from all walks of life.
I have been in some serious accidents and walked away.
I'm semi retired at 55 and doing something that I love.
I've still got my boyish looks.
I'm slender and healthy
I've got a full head of hair and as my best friend says, one of the cutest noses she has ever seen.

Plus I am 56 years old, from a family with a history of longevity and a great grandmother who lived to 107.

Yea, I'm lucky and I don't mind people telling me so.

All of that didn't really start happening till I reached about 25. Before that, I was waiting for things to happen for me. Now I make them happen and as one poster said, one makes luck come to them.

Some of the most miserable people I have met in life are those that have "everything". Nice car, boat, house, "perfect family", money. I've learned its not that, because I've had all that, what really counts is the people that really love you and those that you love in return. All the rest is only icing on the cake.

Peace

Jim

Well, you know they are just jealous, right? I usually say "luck has nothing to do with it--nothing worth having comes easy." I try to stay humble because things can change in a heartbeat.

When someone calls me Lucky, I feel sorry for them. Because, if they think I'm Lucky, their life must REALLY suck.

justplainjim said it all and gave examples. Beautiful!

Additionally, if someone trying to sell you something calls you lucky and he/she has a pained look on their face...you can probably believe them. lol
