I know you said you are looking for someone to interview but I thought I'd make a few suggestions since trying to correspond with a veteran by email mail be tough. If you think about it, if someone was present at Pearl during the attack and remembered enough to help you, they would have to be at least about 76 years old right now. That puts them at 10 years old when the attack occured. Most seniors that age do not utilize computers. Not all but most. I would suggest that you contact your local VFW and do a local search for veteran organizations. You may have a good shot at talking to someone in person that way. Also, local senior citizen homes or centers typically have Veteran groups you can talk to. Good luck with your research.

I don't think anyone old enough to tell you about it would remember the event; they were probably children at the time. But you could try to find a descendant of someone wounded or killed at Pearl Harbor. I'm doing the National History Day, to, by the way. Good luck!

I agree, interviewing someone present that day via e-mail is probably going to be pretty tough. I'd recommend calling your local Veterans Hospital or get in touch with a nursing home. That way you can sit down and actually talk to someone, plus probably make an old vet feel really special for being able to personally help you out.

You may be alittle hard-pressed for a response but I can tell you this. My father-in-law is 91 and a veteran of WWII. He was in the Army and spent '42 to '45 in Africa and Europe. He was finally sent to the Ardnes in Belgium with his division to get some rest after heavy fighting and to recoup. Naturally the Ardnes is heavy forest and it was winter so the Germans weren't expected to advance. Of course they did (The Battle of the Bulge) and he was wounded there and sent to France to convalesce.
Now...HIS brother (who has since died) was a soldier stationed at the Schoefield Barracks at Pearl. He had said that his brother told him he and some friends were hung over that morning and when the Japanese palnes came in low they made an obscene gesture at them thinking initially they were low flying American planes screwing around until they recognized the rising sun emblems on the wings. Of course that and they began strafing and bombing. He said he remebers getting into a motor launch with a handful of soldiers and sailors and pulling dead and wounded sailors from the water after their ships were blown up. Utter chaos and pandamonium and that the smoke was so thick, black and choking from the diesel fuel burning that it blocked out the sun in some places. He said that most of the people he was with were shocked that the japanese had the nerve to attack and about one month after the attack he was shipped out to fight in the Pacific by getting orders to Austraila where he worked fueling planes at an airfield in New Guinea.
