converting measurements to decimal form. Which one is easier and less prone to mistranslations?

Either ruler is accurate, however, metric is less confusing and has simple rules, thus, there are no translation issues when using metric.
What you are probably concerned about is the various measurements using non-metric systems, like mile - there are several of these (naughtical, statute, and many more) - weights (ton - long and short, stone, and other nearly meaningless ones) - volumes (SAE, Imperial). Not to mention words like ounce which is both a weight and a volume or useless terms like heap - that one makes me laugh. However, I would always like to "buy 1 heap of gas" my car since I will never mis-measure it. (by the way 1 heap = 2 heaps when pushed together).

Confusion is abundant using the US standard measurements.

On a US ruler there are 1/8 inch marks, or maybe even 1/16 inch marks. So you measure something and it comes out like 4 3/8 inches. Then you have to convert that to metric if you want metric. And there would be a little rounding off error.

On the US ruler its a little more confusing to "read between the lines." If the item being measured is between two marks, you really have to think to figure it out.

for living in the U.S. its easier because we are used to inches and pounds but other countries would say "im 96 cm and i weigh 500g" and the decimal is affected of whatever because in the ohter system, everything goes by tens but in the U.S. u have 12, 3, 16 etc so the decimal wont alwayz be the same
