i live in a low income apartment and i was told that i needed to change the carpet and i had to pay for it. i don't mind but i want to make sure it is legal. the carpet was slightly damaged but not really. my mother had lived there before me and her cat damaged it, they never bothered to change it before but now she moved out and passed the lease to me. now they are telling me that i need to pay for it because they will get introuble with their managment when they inspect it next week. my manager told me that we had to pay for it cause we had damaged it but i consider it fishy because that carpet had been damaged for 3 years already, which i've only been living there for 1. should i pay for the replacment?

Your mother must pay for the carpet because it was damaged by her cat.

In Georgia you have to add depreciation value of carpet @ 5 year life of carpet. This is then billed back or taken out of deposit after moveout. In Georgia this should not be your responsibility it would be the owners of the place you rent. I would get a copy of the lease. It MUST be spelled out in the lease for you to be responsible. Our leases we use even have the depreciation value per vear broken down on it: 1 year 75%, 2 years 50%, etc. Good Luck!
