Slavery really reached its peak in the 1800's. However New England being the older of the established areas held more intellectuals and industry who argued against slavery than the south, which was basically more agraian than industrial.
Slaves were a marketable commodity and were considered more like cattle than humans. You paid good money for them and although there were more than enough documented incidents of cruelty most slave owners didn't care to cripple, maim or physically impede their slaves because it affected their work and production levels. Hard as this may seem...think of a slave like a horse. If you cut the legs off your horse or shoot it...who'll pull the plow to get the field ready? See the connection?
The south had large farms that required manpower to harvest. It took one slave several hours to pick through cotton lint by hand to make one pound of cotton. When Eli Whitney...an industrialist and inventor from New Haven, CT invented his "engine" or "gin" for seperating cotton from its seed, over a ton of cotton could be produced in a day. The slaves could now dedicate their time to picking cotton rather than picking seeds out of it. So despite a seperating machine, the southern plantations still needed large volumes of manpower to harvest the lint.
But even the south wasn't too thrilled with slavery and knew it was morally wrong. The problem was that most people couldn't come up with any other viable solution to replace the slaves. Thomas Jefferson, himself a slave owner said "Slavery is like holding a wolf by the ears. You don't like it...but you don't dare let it go".

The North was better off financially than the South. The North didn't depend on cash crops for a living so slaves weren't really needed. The South used slaves to make larger profits because it did depend on farming.

Because the south had the more temperate climate, therefore the most agriculture.
crops need people. The south hit on the brilliant idea of slaves.
interesting trivia, the first slaves arrived here in 1619. as we all know, the Plymouth folks got here in 1620.
stick that in your pipe an smoke it.

The custom of selling one of your children in order to get money or food to feed your remaining children is as old as people. The child you sold will be fed, and what you receive for that child will help keep the others alive. Since people originated in Africa, I guess you could say the custom started there. Hunger is a huge motivator. BTW, children in Africa, and the far east are still being sold for the same reasons.
