There is no way to give a precise measurement. First there are deep areas and shallows along the path of the river, and the depth will vary significantly dependent on the amount of rainfall which has fallen during the year. The Comal River is fed by the Comal Springs which arise from the Edwards Aquifer. The usual flow rate is approximately 50,000 gallons per minute, but increases in wet years. The normal depth of the river varies between 4 and 10 ft as has been measured by the area dive clubs and shops.

Rose,
It depends totally on where you are. It's a very slow river. The water comes from Comal Springs right there in New Braunfels. When it gets away from the spring, I'd say it has an average depth of about 5 feet. Some areas are only about 2 or 3 feet, others I'm sure would be 10 or so (enough to drown in if you aren't a swimmer). It's really a very mild river though, an easy 'class 1' meaning that pretty much anyone with sense is safe doing it in an inner tube, as long as they stay fairly sober.

Fyi, I'll be down there camping right next to it, next month (for about the 15th time or so.) :)
