My propane company called today and said that I had to pay over a hundred dollars in "inactivity fees". I haven't needed propane in almost 2 years, and now they're saying since I use their tank I have to pay them for inactivity. I asked them if this is a rental fee, and they said no - it's an "inactivity fee". Huh? Can anyone tell me if this is regular practice?

Okay, I've just been informed that we own the tank, so we're not even "using" their tank. I'm confused about the whole thing.

I would think if you own the tank you cannot be charged for that, UNLESS you signed some kind of an agreement to buy a certain amount of gas within a certain amount of time.
I would tell them you are not going to pay it; period.
Then change gas companies.
We did that with our gas company (we owned our tank too) Plus when we switched over to natural gas we sold the tank for $350xx.

Did they charge you last year? Did you sign a contract with them?

If it is their tank then have them come and get it or tell them you will charge them rent for storing it on your property.

People in your area probably arent using propane as much and they are taking a huge hit. This is crap and I myself would fight it.

Oil companies are making it hard on everyone, they play games because they are greedy. Did you know they bought up huge amounts of corn to try and make ethynol to expensive to produce. They also raised the price of fertilizer.

In effect the price of food and the money it takes to make this food has gone way up. Since when is a trillion dollars a year not enough profit.

I assume you're UK based. There are very, very limited circumstances in which an employer can make a charge from an employee for administrative matters - and this is not one of them. Your partner should simply refuse to pay. If the boss gets annoying about it, you partner should ask that his wages be paid in cash each month from now on. I'm sure payroll will soon see the error of their ways. Incidentally if the boss deducted the charge from your partner's wages, it would amount to an unlawful deduction under the Wages Act. [See? I bet you didn't even know such an Act existed - isn't YA just great?]

Yes, they may just take you off their list. They took my daughters tank and, put in a small one. If it's there's and a big one, they charge for rental. You pay rent for the tank in the gas you buy, you still have to pay the rent, even though your not getting the gas, unless you own the tank but, they can cross you out so, you batter have someone in mind in case you need gas.

Most propane companies will give you the tank for free as long as you purchase a certain amount of gas. It you got the tank for free, they are correct - you need to pay up.

If you have proof of ownership of the tank and do not have some contract stating you have to buy so much propane for the life of the contract . Tell them to take a hike and get a new provider.

If you own the tank, then either it's an error on their part or a scam.

I'd call them and remind them that you own the tank.
If they persist, I'd mention that I am looking for a new propane provider.

Yea, Its sorta like demurrage bill,, If you don't own the tank then you have to pay them a fee for using it, Yours sound kinda high, but i guess its what part of country you are in, I pay $45,00 a year if I don't use over 400 gallon,
Beat of Luck
