i had to do a lab in biology class and now i have to answer if cheeks cells are dead or alive and why. I had wipe the inside of my mouth with a toothpick and rub my saliva on the slide then view it. The cells seemed to stay still but i dont know whether they are dead or alive.

The cells that line the inside of a person's cheek are continually being renewed, with new cells replacing the old ones. The cheek swab gently removes some of these old dead cells that contain perfect DNA samples for testing.

You would have to scrap pretty hard to remove alive cells and they would not live long without nutrients.

Saliva has enzymes that kill cells to help digestion, so that hint makes the answer wanted "dead" even though you might get a live few.

The slime in your mouth protects cells again putting saliva on the slide should kill them quickly.

All working cells are alive. The cells you would be observing would be dead, as they are no longer part of the body and placed on slides. The stain is necessary to show the parts of the cell that are normally transparent. Without the stain it would be ridiculously difficult to see the make up of the cell.

If the cells....from cheeks, onions, boyfriend zits, chicken wing residue from between your teeth...the next day....bird poop on your car.....your brothers booger wiped on the wall....etc....Are alive!....if not.......they would not keep their individual shape.
If you pull a tomato off of the vine...is it dead? after it rots and is all stinky? Nope....not dead....the cells live long after in any plant or animal and anything that was "living" until it eventually turns to dust.
It's ALIVE! not "living"...It's doomed being detached from it's host (your cheeks) but the cells still live until the water and nutrients contained are used up.

Yes the cells are alive. The stain in necessary to see all of the parts in the cell like the nucleus.

onion cells are dead because they have no living source. the cells on the inside of your mouth are alive

since they are no longer part of you they aren't really alive. Do individual cells have the properties of a living thing (MRS GREN)? While they're still in your mouth I think they're alive
