many of the answers are saying that the actors think of a sad moment or use eye drops.....well that may be true
but
when an actor is on stage acting, they really try to become the character....so if the character is crying whether from joy or sorrow the actor therefore cries
i know for me personally i AM the character that i play, so anytime i needed to cry i didnt have to think of an outside situation, all my motivation was right there in front of me, because if my character needed to cry i WAS my character and therefore i needed to cry and the emotion easily came pouring out

I disagree with Theater Doc and co.
Nobody cares if the actor feels the way their character does (I'm not saying they don't, it's just not the main point). It's the audience that must believe and feel the emotion you inspire in them when you cry (or do whatever else). You have to analyze how someone cries and imitate their specific moves, their facial expression etc. and above all, train. Then you'll see, you will just have to trigger the whole process and tears will instantly flow down your face.
I am able to cry like that on command while I'm thinking about something completely different and out of the context.

A lot of actors use a solution that's irritating to the eyes. Kind of like onions, except it's more potent and it doesn't make your eyes as red. Really good actors can make themselves cry, and no they don't have to think of something sad. They simply have total control over their emotions. Other actors actually totally get into their performance, and they start feeling the feelings of their characters. Seriously.

I find that when I put so much emotion into what I am meant to be saying the tears come neutrally. If the tears are about to come and just can't come out I think of something sad that as happened or something that has made me cry in the past and then they usually come.

Well, I know two methods. Either don't blink for a good few minutes(which is kinda painful because it itches a lot) , either they get really into the character's shoes and simply start crying. I can cry on command without not blinking. I just really get into the role and... there ya go...

there are plenty of ways. some actors are just good at channeling their feelings and crying on the spot. for those who arent so good at this there is a scientific approach to this conflict. just take your upper eye lid and pull it down over your lower eye lid. this generates tears and creates the look of crying.
VOILA!!!!! = )

They probably think of something sad. If that doesn't work there is a product that comes in an eyedropper and you put a little under your eyes and they start to tear up.

Hurrah for you Brittiany! Excactly. Someone who knows how to act also knows that when they are playing the role they will experience the same emotions as the character. It is that simple. If one is in character, one reacts as the character does in that situation.

They make sure to have a pair of tweezers in their pocket when they go on set. In order to cry on cue, they reach their hand in their pocket, grab the tweezers, and give their balls a good pinch. works everytime!
