We can't call it the "NL Worst" anymore, as NL West teams Colorado and Arizona swept their ways to the NLCS. Both teams were never expected to be there. Arizona gave up more runs than they scored this season; they had horrible team batting stats ranking at or near the bottom in BA, OBP and OPS. The Rockies needed an 11-game winning streak just to qualify for a one-game tiebreaker to earn the final playoff spot. The betting in the opening round of the NL playoffs didn't match what that of the American League games. That was to be expected; when the Yankees or Red Sox are playing in a series, it's going to attract even the casual bettor. But there's an increased interest in this series as the casual fans have taken notice of the steamrolling Rockies; Arizona is not getting the same support.

I live in Phoenix and I have to say that it has a lot to do with where Chase Field is.
First off its downtown with crazy amounts of Light Rail construction and there isn't a lot of parking.
Second, Phoenix roads are laid out horrible around Chase Field and there are a lot of one way roads that are closed now due to construction.
Third, if Chase Field was in Glendale where it was supposed to be in the first place, there would be a lot more people going to the games... the fact is that there is not a lot of housing where Chase Field stands right now.
Fourth, Dbacks fans do buy a lot of "walk up" tickets... that's why there were about 8000 tickets at the start of the day and it was basically sold out when the game actually started.

A few answers here were good. Phoenix has mostly a transplant population, everyone here is mostly from somewhere else.
The stadium IS in a pretty sucky location. Downtown, and traffic to get there is murder. However, Glendale is NOT a place for a sports team. Who the hell lives in Glendale?
I think the main reason is that the Diamondbacks got rid of their most popular player ~ Luis Gonzalez ~ he was the heart and soul of the D-Backs. The D-Backs have lots of good young talent, but nobody other than Brandon Webb who has been in the Bigs with them for more than a year.
The fans do not really have anyone they can identify with and idolize.

1. It's a weeknight.
2. The Dbacks have only been in existence 10 years, they can't have the same kind of following as the Cubs or Red Sox.
3. Everyone in Phoenix is not from Phoenix originally, they came from somewhere else.

Because Cubs fans aren't there to fill the empty seats and make it look like people care about the Diamondbacks.
And for people who say not enough people can afford playoff tickets to fill the stadium, I don't think there would have been thousands of empty seats at Wrigley, or Yankees Stadium, or will be at Fenway, or Jacobs Field. If the fans really care about their team they would be willing to increase their budgets a little to see their team in the playoffs.

I think it's great. Now the radio and tv can get them and give them to charity or let people win them. Some less fortunate kids, this games for them anyways.
