What do they mean to you, what do you think they meant to Simon and Garfunkel when they wrote them?

And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon God they made.
And the sign flashed out its warning,
In the words that it was forming.
And the signs said, the words of the prophets
Are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls.
And whispered in the sounds of silence.

People are praying to the neon gods... The multi national companies that advertise there products( Coke, Toshiba,Cannon, youve seen the ads on billboards)

they are becoming materialistic..

the Prophets are the common people that write GRAFITI on the subway walls...

maybe the subversive groups in a society that want to overthrow a government that is driven by the multinationals..

& there meetings are whispered in the back streets of the world...

BUT.. The bottom line is it means different things to different people... try researching Paul Simon & see what he was thinking when he wrote it....
