Ok, one thing I just want to say to the other people who have answered. ANY DOG CAN BE UNPREDICTABLE! That's the risk of owning a dog. All the pitbulls I've ever met have been very sweet and affectionate dogs, likewise, I've met non-pitbull dogs that have been extremely aggressive even if it wasn't typical of their breed. In answer to your question, it's basically what you said. Pitbulls are feared because they're use for fighting and bait dogs. They're used because of their build, hardiness, and strength, but there is nothing genetic dis-positioning that causes a pitbull to be any more naturally aggressive than any other dog. Like any large or strong dog though, they should recieve proper training to help alieve some of the unpredictability. A little chihuahua might snap one day and bit someone, but it wouldn't be that big of a deal. If the same thing happened with a rottweiler or pitbull, that would be a whole other story. I work at an animal shelter, and the majority of our dogs are pitbulls. This is not because of aggressive tendecies, but because they are actually a very popular pet but people don't realize how much work and high energy they are. But it breaks my heart that our local animal control (not my shelter) doesn't even TRY to adopt our pitbulls. They euthanize them without even giving them a chance because apparently they are "inherently dangerous." You wouldn't look at a person of another race and think you know a certain trait about them just because it's a stereotype of their race. Dogs are individuals, and every individual dog should be treated as such.

It is sad. People always think that pit bulls are evil killers, but, when It comes down to it, It's the owner, and how the dog is raised. If the dog is raised to fight others, and is abused, then it will be mean. If it's raised normally, and raised with love, then there is a greater chance that the dog won't be mean, but, they still are unpredictable. Just like every other animal.

Yeah I agree. I have had a few and they never hurt anyone. You can take any dog and make them mean
