Possibly the extreme right holds these views because the obverse of this is constant calls of treason directed at liberals. Even here in the replies to your question we have comments such as "treason" and "liberals hate America". What complete arrogance and stupidity. The level of extreme views and prejudice is quite frightening in a country that claims to have an educated society. I dont know of any US liberals who hate America. Sure they may hate the lies that led to the War, and be angry that a so-called war on terror is actually creating more terrorism and making the world less safe by polarising viewpoints.
May I remind the extreme right that if no-one criticised a war or the conduct of war because the extreme right claims that to do so is unpatriotic, then the US would still be fighting in Vietnam. Think about it.

Maybe the problem America has is that its citizens cannot distinguish between the flag, the country, and the politician who represents them.

If we follow the extreme position held by Bush, you are either with us or against us, this is a fundamentalist argument. Therefore, the extreme right view is that if you are not for the war, and for our young men and women fighting for freedom and democracy (good emotional tug), you are against "us". Not so. I , for one, respect troops who give up their homes and families and risk their lives to fight for a just cause. The problem is that the war is not justified, and is creating the very problems Bush et al claim to be eradicating. To remain silent is unpatriotic in my view.

Incidentally I hear views expressed that Bush is doing a good job because there has been no attack on America since 9/11.
Let me point out that whilst American troops stay in the Middle East as targets, terrorism will continue and be unstoppable there. However, when the US extricates itself, and no longer offers American soldiers as targets then I predict that the "enemy" will search for targets elsewhere, and the new encumbent at the White House will face renewed attacks on US citizens world wide and the US will again become a target. Extreme patriotism from the US facing extreme patriotism from the "enemy" is not going to resolve the issues we have to address.

One thing you will notice if a Democrat is elected, is that most Republicans will not deface a President to make them look bad to other countries, nor if the democratic president sees fit to take action against another country , repubs will not demand that the president is impeached or is lying. That's respecting your elected Commander in Chief, and that's called patriotism.
