Yes, you can buy a home test kit at the local hardware store. It will test for basic stuff (chlorine, nitrates, etc.)
We did the test and it was pretty accurate. It showed that our nitrates were too high and then we had a lab test the water after our inital home test. We had to tests done there and they were $70 and $40. The lab tests were more extensive and thorough. So, it depends what you want to test for. It will tell you on that package of the home test kit what it will test for.
We also had our well inspected and they did a test on the water for free. (We already had the lab test, so that was a bummer. Could have gotten it for free!)
Hope this helps you!

There are not really any home test that will do what a lab would do. You can check ph and salts...but no way to check for poisons or bacteria in the water. Pay a lab...by the time you bought all the test you need to do...it would cost you way more than what you would pay a lab...that is IF you could get all the test.

I'm a Med Lab tech, retired. your not going to get the tests your going to want by yourself, you won't know what to look for. Anyone that thinks otherwise is totally wrong. Ask yourself, do you know what bacteria looks like and, how to distinguish it from other bacteria? the good types.
Heavy metals and poisons? I don't think so.
Yes, you can get strips, these are for the hardness in the water, very simple and easy tests that are very overrated.
If you feel that there could be a problem with your water, call a lab, they'll tell you what to do to collect a sample and bring it to them. Pay for it and have it done right.

Haven't heard of a home kit. Lab does best job. Drop it off on way to work & than get results anytime by phone. It is an automatic system in Ontario. U just got to push a lot of buttons.

In Illinois, the county will come out and test it for $30, probably cheaper than an at home test kit.

yea, since when was well water for just plants and stuff? trust me, look around for a good price for a lab to do it. they have extensive testing materials that are far more accurate than anything you could pick up at the hardware store. some of the stuff they use, you can't get for less than several thousands.

A lot of businesses that would end up treating your water if it is bad will test for free. Call one and ask if they offer free water testing and ask if you need to pick a bottle up from them or can you use one of your own.

Maybe; depends on what you want to test it for. Check out test kits at large hardware or home supply stores to see whether they will do the job.
