Hiya. I'm making a list of places I'd like to visit in North America. I've already got Florida, NY and Washington on my list (for various reasons!), but what else, in your opinion, shouldn't I miss, and why?! Ideally it would need to appeal to the whole family - 2 adults, and two girls, 10 and 2 years. Thanks for your help!

I'm a life-long New Yorker, so it's great that you have us on the list. You also might want to get a look at:

Boston and Philadelphia - plenty of history

For touristy stuff with the kids, maybe take a look at the Smoky Mountains region of Tennessee/North Carolina. Great scenery and nature, but also plenty of family-oriented amusements/shows in Sevierville and Pigeon Forge.

Then, there's the west!!!! So much different from anywhere else; you'd be doing it for scenery. The Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, the Badlands, the Rocky Mountains...the list really goes on and on, and I can tell you more if you want; but I want to keep it short for now, makes it easier for everyone. But if you're into nature and scenery, that's an incredible part of the country. Heck, even if you're not into that, it's still incredible.

What time of year are you going? If it's during the middle of summer (June-August), maybe even get up to Alaska! Much more tourist-friendly that time of year. Go any other time, and you'll have to be a bit more adventurous. My family drove up there this summer and enjoyed it thoroughly; it was right up there with our all-time most memorable trips.

You say North America, and from my experience, there are also some great parts of Canada.

How about Ky and Mammoth Cave, the kids will love it. The new Creation Museum just opened up out in Western Ky but I haven't got out there yet but they say its awesome. Dollywood down in Tenn. or the Smokey Mountains. If you head out to the west coast don't miss Yellowstone Park and old Faithful. Have a great trip and enjoy the beautiful scenery.
