The 18th as the Prohibition against alcohol. It created a subculture of speakeasies and racketeers who were responsible for the bootlegging of alcohol. It also gave rise to the "flappers", a type of modern woman that was less domestic, more world wise and more free than the traditional role of women had allowed.

The 19th was women's suffrage. It gave women the right to vote. That one had a more lasting change on society that the 18th, which was eventually repealed. Politics, for many women, had become an essential rather than peripheral part of their self-definition. The vote opened the door for later pushes for women's rights, women's liberation was another freedom women believed they inherited from the 19th amendment.

Simply by reading the 18th Amendment it is clear that alcoholic beverages were outlawed within the United States and its territories (16 January 1919). Besides the obvious that making it illegal created a profitable criminal class which provided what was now a black market product to a public that didn’t support such an amendment. That such was the case was proven when the 21st Amendment repealed this Amendment. However, during the active period of the 18th Amendment it resulted in a legal contest between State and federal power (re:Rhode Island v. Palmer [1920]; Hixon v. Oakes [1924]).

Reading of the 19th Amendment expanded the voting franchise to include women (18 August 1920). This amendment also resulted in a contest between State and federal power. The State of Maryland failed to ratify this amendment. Shortly after its adoption a suit was brought by qualified voters of Maryland to require the Maryland Board of Registry to strike the names of women from the register of voters upon the grounds that the State constitution limited suffrage (voting) to men and that this amendment to the federal Constitution was not validly adopted. This case was rejected and the Amendment declared valid in all States in the case of Leser v. Garnett [1922].
