Define a variable, and then write an equation. Do not try to solve.

Four years ago, three times Cecile's age was 42, her father's age now. How old is Cecile now?

Please make it easy to understand, for example write your answer in this form: 3c + 4 = 42 I know this is wrong but i want your answer to be in this kind of form. Thanks. :-)

A VARIABLE in math is a symbolic representation ( a symbol) of an unknown quantity.

C= Cecile

3C-4=42
3 times C's age 4 years AGO = 42

Variable: a variable is an unknown quantity that is given some symbolic representation. it can have any value and unlike constant its value is not fixed.

let cecile's present age be c
so 4 years ago it would be c-4 ... ok
3 times of that is 3(c-4)
so 3(c-4) = 42
or c - 4 = 14......ok
so this is the required equation....
