White magic is used for good. It is also known as Angel magic. Few texts are as equipped to talk in depth about this. Some good books are The Middle Pillar by Isreal Reguardie, another is The Enochian Tablet, otherwise known as The Emerald tablet, which is a scyring system and touches on applications and meanings. Do get the book Drawing Down the Moon, which is a great beginner book for any one delving into the arts of mystics.

Magic is magic.

Labeling it by color is kind of like saying two identical guns are different because one is owned by a police officer and the other is owned by a known criminal. Applying colored labels to magic has nothing to do with the magic itself - it's all about the intent.

Having said that, what normally gets labeled "white magic" is the beneficial stuff - work for healing and prosperity and whatnot.

White magic is the opposite of black magic. White magic is only used for good deeds that includes both spells and charms that are unharmful to others. While black magic causes harm and death, white magic heals and creates harmony and peace.

It generally means magic that is acceptable to the culture in question (or even just in the mind of the speaker0. Ergo, its a pretty useless designation. Most modern practitioners avoid the color labels for magic. Magic doesn't come in colors. It's neutral. It's a tool. It becomes good or bad depending upon the application.

I agree with Terry on this one. There is no such thing as good or evil magic. Like science, it depends on what it is used for and who is using. For instance: necromancy. Necromancy was mainly used to call upon the spirits for counsel. It was during Renaissance that Necromancy became known as a dark art because it was associated with summoning the dead. Necromancy can also be called white magic due to its restoration of the dead.

Among the basic White Magic spells is the healing aid Cure and its enhancements, Cura, Curaga, and Curaja. Cure, together with spells that awakens a fallen party member (Life) or (Raise), that reduces damage received from physical attacks (Protect) or magical attacks (Shell), or that nullifies negative status ailments (Esuna), comprise the core group of White Magic spells for which the White Mage job class has gained its defensive-based connotation.

Black magic is used to do bad things and will later hurt your karma, so white magic is the opposite, it's used to make good things happen and will not hurt your karma.

Magic is the use of energy. The only color association it has it was it is intended for. However look at it this way:

Is water good or bad? It can be good because we need it for basic survival or we can die due to drowning. Black leads to the misconception of "evil" but water doesn't become evil when someone drowns.
