How do you know if the pile is running the same way? How long does it generally take?

most carpets have arrows or numbers even guides on the bottom of the carpet to show you the way the carpet pile runs. Depending on what kind of tools and knowledge you have will determine among other factors how long it will take

If the carpet fits the room you won't need to worry about the pile direction. If you have to seam join it look at the back of the carpet it will have markings on it so you will need to make sure the marking point in the same direction. You will need to put nail boards down around the perimeter of the room. These have little nails that bite into the backing of the carpet so you can stretch it and hold it tight so there are no wrinkles. This requires a knee kicker device to stretch the carpet over the nail boards. If you have to make a seam you will need to overlap the two pieces and cut a straight line thru both pieces at the same time to get an edge match. After you do this you will need to but seam tape undr the seam and using a seaming iron place it down on the tape with the carpet up and to the sidesso the iron can move thru like a boat thru water . As the iron melts the glue you will need to push the 2 halves down and together behind the iron to make the seam you do this about a foot at a time until you are across the full seam. P.S. seams need to be made before you knee kick the carpet into the wall. You may want a pro if you never did this before buts that how to learn. Good Luck

not all carpet has arrows or markings on the back.......most of the time the installers, when doing multiple rooms that join each other, will just make a note when cutting the carpet for the rooms on which way it runs.......ex..... from front to back of house.......on a lot of carpet you can run your hand through it back and forth and one part will stand up and another will lay down but that doesn't always apply......
as far as time.....its impossible to say.....
me and say 3 other knowledgeable guys can do maybe 4 or 5 standard size rooms in a working day if every thing is empty but some carpet can give you fits like when matching patterns and seams.....way to many variables involved...............

If you want to have your carpet look good, hire someone that knows "stretchers' the "kickers" and how to use these tools. Your carpet will look beautiful.

Why spend good money on a nice carpet and have it look shabby because you didn't put it in right.
