I'm starting an internet based business. My question is when naming your new business is there a database that you need to register with in order to become official? So that I don't take someone else's name or vice versa. Where can I find out such information?

Any domain name registration will have a search to see if it is available. But if you are looking for a business name checkout your local county registrar office.

The answer to your question can be addressed by calling the secretary of state in the where you want to do business in.

I just started a business, and have done this within the last week.

Well when I registered my business name, the County Clerk's website had a search engine, in which you typed the name you wanted and it would search for similar names in that county.

go to any search box and type in domain search.
Pick one and enter your domain name.
You will find it used or not used. Not used you are free to purchase.
