My grandmother went to college before 1900 in New England.
School teachers in pioneer days were girls who had completed about 8th grade and hired on to teach the younger ones but weren't paid. Only in food, fire wood and corn or something to eat. If they got engaged then they often could not teach because they might get pregnant and then the kids would know about THAT! So they were out of luck. My great-gran told me that She was from Iowa.
My aunt, 1930's was the only girl in her NJ H.S to ever take physics. The boys and the teacher wired the doorknob as a prank. She got shocked but no one was disciplined.
Girls were not permitted to play basketball in my elementary school, 1960's we had to sit and watch the boys play. So even if there is some progress, it still goes on...

A hundred years ago- that's 1907. Haven't you ever seen pioneer stuff with the one room schools which girls attend? That stuff was even before 1907. As far as I know smart girls even went to college in 1907, its just that they were expected not to do anything with there education's once they got married.
