OK, read a book called Is There Anybody Out There by Frank Drake and Dana Sobel. It is Frank Drakes biography and he is the founder of the SETI program. He came up with a formula for determining how many civilisations there are 'out there'.

You could also read Carl Sagan (an exobioloist, now dead, author of Contact) - the guy who sent messages out on Voyagers 10 and 11 because he was convinced the universe was teaming with life..

This is a widely held opinion.

Try looing under SETI in Wikipedia if you can't be bothered reading. Also look up 'the drake equation'.

I just typed 'extraterrestrial life' into the Y! search engine and got over 4 million hits. The first 3 or 4 looked pretty good.
