like hundreds of years ago? In medieval times? 17th century? I wonder about this often..

Cloth...or 'rags' as these fine ladies above me mentioned. It was usually worn like a diaper...much like the paintings you see of Christ or men in other religious type paintings that have the cloth wrap around their waist and tucked down between their legs and buttocks.
It was considered a woman's 'unclean' time and to engage in sexual intercourse with her during this 'period' (no pun intended) was unsanitary and a sin.

They wore rags and kept to their rooms if they could (the wealthy class). Read the novel THE RED TENT to learn a bit more about how women handled it in Biblical times.

Oh, working class women just dealt with it. One of the reasons they probably liked being pregnant is they didn't have to deal with it for nine months.

Yeah, being pregnant was better than putting up with monthly cycles.

Didn't they use rags of cloth and that's why periods are sometimes referred to as 'getting your rags'.
