I went into McDonalds today and ordered fries and some McNuggets, and asked for a cup of water. They used to always give me cups but they said they don't give cups anymore. I'm not much of a soda drinker, and their juice isn't really juice either, so I drink water, and was not willing to spend a buck for a cup of water. Are they allowed to do that (in the state of Virginia)?

I know we're in a drought, but drinking water is still the same price, they just discourage water lawns and washing cars and such. Also McDonalds around here has been serving free water for as long as I can remember.

No. While fast food outlets usually do so to keep customers happy there is no law that states that a restaurant has to give away anything. The could charge you for napkins if they wanted to. It just depends on what the market will tolerate.

No they do not to answer your question. Considering most of virginia is in an extreme drought I'm shocked you would ask for any without being willing to pay for it. McDonalds has been charging for water for over a year now. Next time you want water fill a bottle at home and take it with you.

No place HAS to serve free tap water - they do so as a courtesy. There are some restaurants out there that you wouldn't want to drink their water - and they know that, so they don't serve it. (odd as it is, yes they still cook with that water - but possibly only after boiling it!) There's no law saying they have to do it either. Mostly because they may not have very good tasting water, maybe because they really just want to sell that bottled water to you instead. It's up to you whether you want to put up with their excuses or not.

No business is bound by law to give anything for free, unless they advertise that they do.
