You could have less things running in the background click on Start Menu, run, then type in msconfig, when the box comes up click the Startup tap, uncheck everything but keep any security, anti virus stuff checked and then say ok. It will ask if you want to restart, you can either restart now or later. When you restart a box will come up telling you have made some changes, just tick the box saying you don't want to see that message again. You will have less program running in the background which should speed up your computer a bit.

You need to triple the memory at least. Think about bringing it up to the 800MB to 1 gig range. You can also increase the swap file.

You did not tell us what software you have loaded. If it is XP then you could use more memory. Depending on your laptop it should be easy to add more memory. Should have a empty slot to add.

I know you don't want more RAM, but most laptops nowadays come with 2GB, which is 2048MB -- more than ten times what you have. Save your money and even if you just upgrade to 512MB you will notice a HUGE difference.
