This was a very unfortunate, sad and tragic BUT it was preventable. The responsibility falls upon the parents and/or adults that were accompanying the child. You must be aware of your child, hold on to them, no matter where you are and how old they are.

It really wasn't the park's fault for what happened. The parents that allowed a 4 year old child to get to close to the edge without watching her are the ones actually responsible. The park could put up fences all they want, and someone would go over the top of it, or under it, a child could slip under the last bar if someone isn't watching. It all comes down to that.

I completely agree with vonmousecat. I feel terrible for the girl, but I just do not understand how it was even possible for the parents or guardians to let that little girl walk around there by herself.
The Grand Canyon is HUGE....this would cost millions and millions to fence it all in....and it would destroy the beauty of the Grand Canyon too.

Parents are responsible. Not the park service. And if you had any idea what minimal funding is giving to that area of government, which protects the most beautiful land in America, you would understand its not in the budget to rail off the Grand Canyon.
Obviously you have not been there or you would understand what a large undertaking that would be.
I'm not criticizing you, but people need to start taking responsibility for their actions. She was four years old. She was visiting the largest hole in America. Obviously it is dangerous and she should have been kept physically touching her parents at all times.

Yes it's a horrible tragedy but parents are responsible for their kids.
The canyon is 277 miles long! The cost would be astounding. More kids die walking along roads every year. Shall we put rails along all the roads too?

what can we do
we can take responsibility for our kids and when out in the public where there are dangers. we can keep a hold of them. its not the parks fault this happened its the parents
its our job as parent to protect our kids not expect someone or some place to do it for us while we pay little to no attention to our kids

ive been to the grand Canyon before and it was pretty safe.
its natural they're and famous for it so roping or blocking off the side wont help much.
people need to use common sence and not bring little kids they're
but i do agree something needs to be done perhaps widening the walk way, or removing the horses that walk theyere.
or renting the horses farther down where its wider.

I didn't hear about that. That's horrible. How old was the girl and where were the parents? They shouldn't have let their daughter go near the edge of the Grand Canyon. I think that the park officials need to put a rail on all of it and/or ban parents with little kids from going there.

Please, we can not protect children from every possible danger -that is for parents to do. There is no way on earth a 4 year old should have been allowed near enough to the edge to fall off. You hold her hand!
