I just need a little explaining about this:

4 (x+y) + x

Directions: Simplify the expression and evaluate it when x = 2 and y = 5.

The back of the book says it 5x + 4x

Can someone explain how its 5x + 4x?

4(x + y) + x
= 4x + 4y + x
= 5x + 4y

The answer is (5x + 5y), not (5x + 4x).

when x = 2, when y = 5,
5x + 4y
= 5(2) + 4(5)
= 10 + 20
= 30

use the foil method.
4x+4y+x. the four has to be multiplied by everything in the parenthesis.
then combine like terms.
5x+4y

so i dont know why the heck the book says 5x+4x. probably a misprint
5(2)+4(5)
10+20=30

4(x+y) + x
=4x+4y + x
= 5x +4y
When x=2 and y =5 we have
5(2) +4(5) = 10+20 = 30
