It depends on what what state he/she is in, and why he/she was fired. Some states like Texas are "right to work state(s)". Meaning, the employee has the right to quit when he/she wants, and the employer has the right to fire you when they want, and for any reason that makes them feel good, just as long as it isn't a protected civil right (example: gender, race, color, religion etc.). If your friend was fired, and there was no contract for employment, and it wasn't for one of the protected civil rights (gender, race, color, religion etc.), then he/she probably doesn't have a cause of action (lawsuit).

I don't think so but it could depend on what state too. If you're in a no fault state, they can fire you for anything and not have to give a reason. If you're wasting company time looking for a job or calling in sick and going on interviews and not doing your work, I suppose they could fire you if they wish.
It may not sound fair but unless it's discrimination, there's probably nothing you can do.

Firing your BECAUSE you are looking for a different job is legal. There are illegal reasons for firing you. It makes no difference whether you are looking for a job or not.

Think about it. You are essentially caught in a process that tells your employer that you are about to leave them. And, more than likely, you are doing some of it on company time. Would YOU keep an employee who is planning on leaving you soon?
Of course they can fire you. Disloyalty is a serious offense.

No. Some people act like arrogant jerks saying "God, I'm SO getting outta this DUMPSITE!" Those people deserve to be kicked to the curb.

Not at all, questionable loyalty is a perfectly appropriate reason to fire someone.

Go to your state employment office and report this.
You can collect unemployment. Talk to the state employment office about this too.
