I play the bowed psaltery, an ancient intrument that has been revived. It is triangular, and you use one or two bows to play the strings on each side. However, I couldn't afford a second bow, so I had to learn to crossbow.

I know more than 500 songs "by heart" and play "by ear", as they say. Generally, if it's not a difficult melody, I can learn it after listening to it a few times. My repertoire includes traditional/folk, ethnic, musicals, the Sixties and contemporary. I have had one paid gig (a mother/daughter tea), participated in a contest (unfortunately when I was running such a high fever that I could barely function), and played on a professional stage as an invited performer. I've performed in public many times, always gathering a crowd, and I recently started setting out the traditional "begging bowl" aka "tip bowl". I was given a $5 bill once! And, one day, I earned about $35~for just sitting around practicing my songs!

My psaltery is from this company, which has the best! I've tried playing various makes, and Unicorn Strings has a wonderful creation. I'll never regret splurging that summer~ about 10 years ago, I think it was.

Here are some bowed psaltery performances:

The songs are "Greensleeves" and "Piper Through the Meadow Straying". I know both of those! Yea!

BTW: Long, long ago, I played the double keyboard organ, one of those with all of the foot pedals. Then, when I worked in a factory for almost two years, I developed Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and couldn't play anymore without suffering severe pain. So, I couldn't make music except singing. It would be many years before I came across the bowed psaltery at Bristol Renaissance Faire~thank goodness!

I love to listen to fife and drum, bagpipes, hammered dulcimer, harp, Irish penny whistle, and other ethnic instruments.

As much as I love music, I tragically have no talent for the art myself. However, I could listen to any instrument for hours on end. Guitar is a pretty obvious choice, as it's both very popular and sounds beautiful, but there are so many others, some of which I can't name. Xavier Rudd incorporates the stomp box, ankle bells, and some amazing didgeridoo into his music. Piano in combination with some acoustic guitar is awesome, same with violin. I think my absolute favorite, though, is percussion. Rusted Root's 'Back to the Earth' comes to mind, as does Ani DiFranco's 'Joyful Girl'. Put all of those together, and it's a good time. I love music. Good question.

I play the drums and I actually came into that by accident I was teaching my son the base~snare beat (he's 5) and when I was doing that I just started beating around on them some and realized that I could do it!!!

Myfavorite to hear is my husband playing the electric guitar! He's really good. He's been teaching it for about five years and has a jazzy/rock sound it always calms my nerves!!!

I played clarinet and trombone in high school. I love all of the instruments in the orchestra, but French horns sound so cool!

The piano! I used to love laying on the couch and listening to my brother play when we were kids. He has a lot of natural talent.
