The only thing I noticed that was strange is the fact that there is no way to get the gumballs out, if they are commercial machines! No slot for the money and no turn knob or handle to release the gumball once the money is dropped in. Can it illustrate the fact that a thing may be desired but not so easily obtained? Is it possible that it signifies that the gumballs are free, no one believes it and no one has attempted to simply tip the holder to release the balls, hence they are all full? Or can it simply be that there are three gumball machines that look identical to one another but each one holds a completely different thing making for three entirely different outcomes. Is it about the choices and chances we face and take in life?

Of course, it is a pop art painting, which means taking something popular (an image) and turning it into art. andy Warhol was the master of this technique. I think the painting is all about choices. There are 3 gumball machines. Which one should you pick? And each of them has the same contents, gumbalss, so does it matter which one you put your money in....the gumballs are round, representing the world,,,,thus life (the world) is full of choices and is doesn't matter which you pick, it will be right for you....

It might say something about homogenity and conformity. All of those gumballs are in so many different colors....and yet they're jammed together, "safely" contained by the identical gumball machines.

Are we all just gumballs stuck in a machine? A ball within a ball...a microcosm for the great ball we're all on - earth?

The boy just likes gumballs. Some things are significant only in that an artist thinks, "Hey! This'll look cool."

I'm afraid not,but I dont know a lot about art. I've seen some of the works that win the grand prize at an art festivals and wonder what in the world the judges were thinking. I can just see some artsy type people looking at it and seeing all kinds of things. Good luck finding any artsy people in here.

I think it means that life is all about luck and you can never really know what life will give you. each gumball machine is a different choice and each one will give you a different possibilty (gumball). That could be wrong but thats what i get when i look at it! good luck!

I do not think that artists create a picture with a "meaning" always. For example why did Warhol paint cans of Cambell's soup or Jackson Pollack "throw Paint" on a canvas? They just do. Art is subjective, it means what it means to you. To me this painting makes me think, 1) three 2) blowing bubbles with gum 3) my son had to draw his show for art class. To him, its significance was a grade in art.

I love Wayne Theibaud... the color, design, repetition, mechanical pop culture... The color! I like all of his work taken together. Seems to start making even more sense then, and having more of an impact.

sometimes a painting of three gumball machines is just a painting of three gumball machines.

Well I know there was a time in art when people painted ordinary things like that.
