If you only know her from school, your chances of success are very slim. Your chances of being found out and made fun of are greater. However, if you know this girl outside of school, I would suggest you approach her personally in a setting other than school. Either talk with her or give her your note. Your chances of success are still slim, but better; and you're a lot less likely to be found out and made fun of. Hopefully, she is a sweet and understanding girl.
I may sound a little "pie in the sky" here, but during the summer after my eighth grade year, a friend of mine struck up a relationship with a girl who was going to be a high school senior. The relationship lasted for only that summer, but nonetheless happened. Weigh the pros and cons of pursuing this relationship. Be hopeful for success, but be prepared for disappointment. That's the best I can tell you.

She should read the letter, talk to him and find out if he was mature enough to take her out. Just remember, next year she is off to college and he is still in grade 10 in High School.

I think she would feel akward and try to avoid the boy. I suppose its a little more socially acceptable for a younger girl to be into an older guy.
Your circumstance could be different. Give it a try.

I actaully had that experience and my young guy was very mature for his age and very athletic and good looking. I decided that I really liked him and I wasn't going to give in to peer presure or teasing. We actually became very good friends and eventually he was my first lover. It was fantastic! So, don't worry too much....it's only 4 years difference which later in life will seem like nothing at all.

It depends on the content of the letter. If it says something like, "I watch you every day, infact, I'm watching you right now." I'll be freaked out. If it says something like, "I Love You, please be mine!" I'll laugh and throw it away. If it says something like, "I think you're pretty cool, you want to hang out some time?" Then I'll take it into consideration.
