This doesn't equal anything? You are just asked to factor it? Right????
you begin with:
( x- )( x + )
you should have memorized in the trinomial that if the pattern is minus, minus, then in the factors, you have are plus, minus.
Next step, put in the x es.
Now your job is to find that when you multiply to get 5 and 1 that the combinations for the center are 9. Some books will show you a face, with a chin, and a grin, but I have no way of showing you that soooo you try to do some cross multiplying to see if you can find the factors.... the factors of 5 are
5 1
and the factors of 2 are
2 1
watch
5 1
2 1
__________
if you multiply the top 5 by the bottom l you get 5. and when you multiply the top l with that bottom 2 (cross multiplying) you get 2.
If you look at those signs in the factors you have already set up, you can see that you must add and subtract them, so you get 7 or a 3, and neither of those is 9.
So you change their position
5 1
1 2
_________
When you cross multiply, you get 10 and 1, and you look at those factors that you have already set up, you see that you have to subtract the two, 10-1=9, and that is what you need.
Soooo the 5 goes in front of the first x, and a non-esistant goes in front of the second x
a 1 goes after the + sign, and a 2 goes after the - sign.
Too bad your book doesn't show The chin and grin trick,
the answers are then
(5x+1)( x -2)
to verify that this is right, multiply it out.
It is important that you understand this factoring stuff.... about everything from now to the end of the year depends on it.... if you need help, write... I help kids all over.

5x^2-9x-2 *NOTE - ^2 = squared
You sort of use a reverse foil method. You KNOW the answer will be 2 binomials.
( )( ) - make brackets for your binomials
The First term (5x^2) has the following factors...
break it down into x^2 & 5.
The factors of x^2 is either x & x or -x & -x. You can usually assume that it is x & x, because if you need negatives to get the middle term you can use the coefficient to do that. Now we have:
( x )( x )
Factors of 5: 5 & 1 or -5 & -1
Now let's look at the factors of the last term (-2).
They are: -1 & 2 or 1 & -2
Which combination of these sets of factors would give us the middle term when we use the FOIL method?
If we use -5 & -1 & -1 & 2, then we get -10x + 1x which equals -9x which is our middle term. Plug these factors in the brackets.
ANS: (-5x - 1)(-1x + 2)
EDIT: (5x + 1)(x - 2) also gives you -10x + 1x which equals -9x which is our middle term. Both answers are correct.

5x^2 -9x -2
You need to look at b^2-4ac which equals 81+40 = 121 =11^2. This tells you that there are two real roots that are = to (9 +/- 11)/10 = 2 and -1/5
So (x-2) and (5x+1) are factors

5x^2-9x-2
(5x+1)(x-2)
I don't think there's real method to solve this, you just start with
(5x + a)(x + b)
You just keep picking values for a and b that multiply to -2 and also that a*x+5x*b add up to -9 and 1=a and -2=b satisfy these two conditions

The problem cannot be done because it does not have like terms, and you can only add, subtract, multiply and divide like terms, otherwise you just say,
"Cannot be simplified"
Good luck!
