Is that identity being intruded upon by the Spanish language?

I will try to keep this succinct, so that I do not morph into ranting. I am not sure just how important English is to the national identity of the US, but I feel very strongly that the favoring of one, largely illegal, population over all other legal immigrants is extremely detrimental to the identity of the United States. Of all the languages of all the immigrants who have come to this country to become citizens, why select Spanish as the tacit "second" language and insist all government literature be printed so the Spanish-speaking (but English illiterate) population can understand? Why pick Spanish as the language that our teachers must learn in order to teach a group of (again, largely illegal) students? Our national identity has always been the assimilation of immigrants into our culture, language and way of life. It is the illegals who refuse to do this, and it has gone on far too long.

English is our national language.

I agree with you. It is being intruded on by the Spanish language. The problem comes from illegals who come here, live off our taxes, and refuse to learn English although the opportunity to do so is ridiculously abundant. So we're having to learn Spanish to communicate with them!

I think there should be a law that forces them to become a citizen if they're going to live here, and another one that forces them to learn OUR language. If they're going to live in OUR country, they need to learn OUR language!

Hispanics have no incentive to learn or speak English. Almost every place caters to Hispanics, and things are translated in Spanish. There are always other Hispanics to translate. The Hispanic population in America has risen. Would you bother learning Chinese in China if the English speaking population in China was almost 40%? No, I don't think so because you wouldn't have to. Strenght in numbers.
