You can only use Delivery Confirmation if you're sending a parcel. You can send a First Class parcel with DC if the package is at least 1/4" thick. So you could use a bubble envelope with some packing peanuts or bubble wrap stuffed in to make it thick enough.

Probably priority mail (free mailer, envelope), will get there within 2-3 business days. Delivery confirmation is just a sticker they apply with the number on it and signature block. They might be able to apply it to a standard envelope. Priority mail is less than $5, I don't see you paying more than $7 tops to mail a letter priority with delivery confirmation. You can just mail it in an envelope with delivery confirmation for less than $2-3. It should get where it's going in 2-5 business days via first class(regular) mail, depending on how far it's going.

Use priority mail, wich is 2-3 days anywhere in the US. The next best is 2-5 wich usually gets there in 2-3 but its not guaranteed. Priority mail is almost the same anyways. For delivery confirmation, you just ask them at the post office and they charge you like 2$ extra (you dont need a special envelope or anything at all)

the special services are explained on the usps.com website. i don't think you need priority mail if delivery within 4 business days is your requirement. but there is a small fee for delivery confirmation and note the following requirements.
Delivery Confirmation may be used with the following services:
First-Class Mail® Parcels
Priority Mail®
Package Services Parcels - Includes Parcel Post® , Media Mail® , Bound Printed Matter, and Library Mail.
Standard Mail Parcels - must be less than 16 ounces and mailed at the electronic rate.
Parcel Select® - must be mailed at the electronic rate.
Note: All items (except Priority Mail) mailed with Delivery Confirmation must measure at least 3/4" at the thickest point, or be in a rigid box.

If you MUST have it there in 4 days, pay extra for the priority mail. You can use a regular envelope for delivery confirmation. If you are using priority mail, they'll put a regular envelope into the cardboard, flat rate one.

No, it's not the envelope that you will need. It's a separate form that sticks to the top. You can get signature confirmation by email if you do a electronic return receipt :)
This is the link to the Postal Service that tells you about the regular delivery confirmation. All forms are available for free at the post office.

You just go to the post office and tell them you want delivery confirmation. It doesn't matter what the letter/package is in. They put a sticker on it that has a bar code and tracking number. If you send it priority, make sure you ask them if the letter will get there by such & such a date. They can tell you. If it won't make it on time, you may have to over-night it.
Delivery confirmation doesn't cost too much. If you over-night it, that will be several dollars extra.

You can use your envelope and only have to pay extra to get a confirmation. They put a sticker on your envelope which must be signed by the recipient. It's then returned to you.

You can use any envelope. you will have to send it "return receipt requested."
You can't just drop it in the mailbox- you have to go to the window and tell them what you want.
There is a small charge for this, about 2.25 in addition to postage..

registered...return receipt.
Used to do it all the time in USCG.
Did paperwork for background investigations for crewmembers in USCG.
DIstrict would claimed they didn't get the paperwork.
so we started mailing them registered ...return receipt.
Then we had a signature.
