Since marriage is a religious institution, shouldn't the government NOT be involved with that. Shouldn't all couples be required to get a civil union license in order to gain the benefits and if they then care to formalize it with a religious "Marriage" then that is between them and their religion.

As I said "Marriage" is a religious institution therefore government should NOT be involved. How can you get in front of a COURT OFFICIAL and get MARRIED if marriage is a religious insitution?

Is this a gay thing?

It has to be legal in order to protect the rights of the married couple. So you apply for a license at the courthouse which you have to do regardless. Then it is your choice. You go in front of some court official and get married right then. Or you go in front of a priest/pastor/rabbi and he signs it and has to submit the papers.

What is the point? What other thing could be done?

And you are close to right! Shouldn't that be a state decision?
