I was reading a question where someone was asking for video game recommendations for her six year old, and someone said "Why don't you just sit down and play a board game with her instead?" She got five thumbs down and only one thumbs up.(from me, might I add) I don't understand why people are so offended by this. I've always loved board games. I always begged my mom to play them with me, and she never did. Is everyone so offended because they don't want to spend time with their children? It's not like parents and their children can bond from playing video games!

It was probably other kids giving the thumbs down responses. They like video games, they feel it is their god-given right to have video games and not a luxury as it was in the past. Plus, if they sat down with mom and dad and played a board game, their parents would probably ask them intrusive questions like, "Do I know all your friends?"

I used to play Boggle and Scrabble with my mom and I enjoyed it immensely.

Remember when Atari came out and it cost $100(!)? That was a luxury. Kids now are too spoiled.

There are a number of reasons people might get offended.
One could be that you're responding with an off-topic answer to their question -- they asked for video game recommendations, not board games.
Additionally, just because you play video games doesn't mean you can't play board games. You don't know enough about the person that posted the question to assume this is all they let their child do. Just because video games tend to get negative press doesn't mean it's an over-arching theme.
Lastly, it's absolutely untrue that people can't bond over video games. You're obviously biased towards board games, which leads me to assume you haven't really played many video games -- there's a plethora of multiplayer, not to mention very family-oriented games out there. And nowadays, they're getting more interactive by the week, thanks to systems like the Nintendo Wii.

Also, along the same line, to the person that said all the thumbs-downs were from kids, don't be so quick to judge -- there's no way to tell who was giving them. I'm no kid, and while I'm definitely not an adult, I know plenty of people in their late 20s & 30s who play.

First off, the multiple thumbs down in this case is probably because that doesn't answer the question, it simply passes judgement.

Secondly, yes parents and kids CAN bond playing video games. I played games with my Dad when I was a kid, video and board. My brother in law plays video games with his daughter all the time, they both have a lot of fun together.

I do agree that parents should play board games with their kids, but I also think it's important to keep play things they like with them. Any time spent doing something together is bonding, be it a board game, a video game, reading a book, or baking cookies.
