When the British faced the colonists in Lexington their well-trained troops outnumbered the local farmers. When someone fired a shot (no one knows who) the British panicked, defied their officers, and fired on the colonists. After the British went to Concord to destroy the American supplies there, they marched back to Boston on the road that passed back through Lexington. To their surprise the Americans were not standing in the road facing them, as European armies were trained to do. Instead they hid behind the stone walls and fired on the marching British. The British realized that they were the outnumbered ones that time and started to run back to Boston. All along the road farmer-militia men were shooting at them. By the time they reached the western side of Lexington they were in full rout and if they had not been joined by British reinforcements coming from Boston they would have been wiped out.

There were a few casualties for the Colonists then the British went to North Bridge in Concord where there was a skirmish with casualties on both sides. On the march back to Boston, the Brits got battered by colonists joining the fight from the surrounding Massachusetts towns and suffered pretty high casualties
