The only parallel I can think of is the irrational fear both events have created.
Back when Sputnik ramped up the cold war by more than a notch, the American people reacted sanely and started a technological competition which brought us the moon landings and quite a bit of space science.
After 9/11 the children and grandchildren of the same people started a useless war in the wrong place. Which leads me to conclude that sane parents don't necessarily have sane children.

Both events were wakeup calls, prompting sudden changes in national priorities and enormous Federal expenditures sustained by a high level of public approval. The "Space Race" and the "War on Terrorism" will be remembered by historians as the defining experiences of the Kennedy and Bush presidencies. Only the Cuban missile crisis had comparable impact under Kennedy, and, if the Iraq War is considered an outcome of 9-11, there is no other significant event with George Bush.

Aside from the fact that both were monumental occurrences- Absolutely nothing.
One was the first artificial satellite launched into earth's orbit.
The other was a terrorist attack.

If you stretch it you can say that they both involved flying objects that were destroyed, but that's stretching it.
There are no real parallels or connections to these two incidents.
