Yes the banker does what a banker does. They do the banking! A banker is a very broad term.

Hi,

I'm a banker.. it's GREAT!

Although I wasn't always a banker.. for many years I was a finance student, and then for many many years after that I was a bank clerk, and customer service person.. but eventually.. I started working with the public offering bank products in all areas of business.. and became a banker

I now run my own company, still working as a banker but it's not quite the same as working for a large bank. The amount of power you feel and knowing you can get away with so much more in the market place and have access to so much information.. its amazing having that advantage..

As for the scope, well my experience is that irrespective of your race color or creed, there is always a place in banking for someone male or female who is highly astute, highly educated and who has a strong ethical platform as well as a "purpose" a justification for being.. most bankers you would find have very comprehensive lives and many are up standing citizens in society.. sadly they suffer from the bad image of blockbuster movies and headline stories.. which is only a minority of the ultra rich .. most bankers do not earn massive wages.. most have regular mortgages.. in nice middle class suburbs.. true.. but they owrk hard for it, I used to work 14 hour days for 10 years.. and all those years I barely afforded a rental apartment.. bank wages start very low.. and my friends working as plumbers and taxi drivers made more money back then.. towards the end.. I had a company car, mobile phone, they even paid for my home phone and gave me whatever I asked for.. including a full leather office chair for my home office.. in return I broke the banks sales record!

I now own my own investment/fiannce company.. and it just keeps getting better.. truth be told I really miss working in the banks.. I now work in my own smallish office.. it doesnt feel the same as when I walked the marble floors and looked up 30 meters to see the hanging ornamental candelabras.. and I miss the thousands of new faces I saw evey week.. now I sit under a neon that buzzes intermitently.. and walk the creeking wooden floor boards to my office "suite" hehe.. I guess I've moved on from being a banker .. but I certainly gained massive experience from banking and will always regard it highly.

You just don't hire in as a Banker.
Smaller institutuions normally hire at the bottom and work there way up. starting an associate that greets customers and opens new accounts. Then, they make the move up to Tellars, that handle the money at the different bank service area's from the drive through't to working the counters.
From here they work there way up through the different area's of Finance including Instalment loans, Buisness loans then vice presidents in these area's depending onm the size of the branch they work at.
They just don't hire you fresh out of school to be the head of a dept you have only read about in school each bank does there buisness in different ways.

If you become a banker at our bank, you will happily withdraw $35 from our account for an overdraw of $0.28. That's right, 28 cents!

Look it up on Wikipedia. It is a very broad area.

Basically they handle peoples money and ensure it is kept safe and accounted for.
They also choose whether to loan money to borrowers, and at what interest rate.

Those in the City handle shares and bonds and other instruments called derivatives, and it is all quite complicated.
