Many vegan/vegetarian people are extremist. Strangely enough so is PETA, a lot of those people belong to a group like PETA that doesnt promote pets, period. So things like horse back riding, dog-sledding, dog agility, having a fish tank etc. are considered acts of cruelty. However I feel that they should refocus their efforts on the people that ignorantly buy animals, or breed them, and treat them terribly, not the kind people among us that simply love all animals.

I've just posted what I think over there on that board. Unfortunately too many people that become veggie or vegan then develop a sanctimonious and pretentious attitude to others. They spout a complete load of tosh because it fits with their world view. Quite frankly I find the majority of them scary and some are just plain dangerous. I went to school with a girl that joined the Animal Liberation Front which are basically terrorists and she was found guilty of poisoning frozen turkeys in a supermarket with mercury. The rights of the dead turkey were higher on her list than the welfare of children sitting down for Christmas dinner. I find that just sickening.
You can tell by reading their posts that most have never even been near a horse let alone know anything about racing which appears to be on of their favorite bashing topics. If they don't like riding or racing, that's their perogative but they have no right to denigrate anyone for alternative views. In my opinion they are mainly whack jobs that falsify the facts of every subject they become involved in to further their own cause.

I was showing in Palm Springs once and was picketed as an abusive person because I dared ride my horse over jumps! I do not buy in to any fanatical viewpoint, on any matter. These crazies out there most likely hate the whole world!
My point of view is, when you are paying my bills, you have the right to tell me what to do. If not, them let me live my life the way I choose. I choose to ride and enjoy the company of my horses.

well i dont think its fair for anyone to group all the vegans and vegetarians together, or ALL people who support PETA as extremists. i like SOME of the work PETA does, but i definately dont support everything they do. i sometimes find contradictions..for example The Body Shop is owned by Loreal, one of the biggest animal testers in the world, but PETA still supports the body shop? it makes no sense, it makes me wonder if they are taking "donations" from them? but anyways, back to the subject, im a vegan and definately dont consider riding your horse normally abusive! thats rediculous, i have encountered this behavior, and we all know that there are extremists out there who dont want you to breathe. i would just ignore it if i were you.

i'm also vegetarian. i own and ride horses. no i dont belive i'm harming my horses by riding them. most vegans and extreme vegetarians say that since the horse didnt give you permission to ride him that you're forcing the animal to do something against his will for your own pleasure... i think that's bs but that's the vegan theory on the matter. vegans believe that horses are wild animals and it's unethical to keep them in a fence or use for human benefits.

People are stupid. There can be abusive situations for animals- think some of those TWH people. But just riding a horse is not abuse! Ignore misinformed idiotic people!

Let me guess, PETA supporter who told you that?? Look, every animal that someone owns has a chance of being abused, but the VAST majority are loved and treated like family. My horses certainly seem content, even with their horrible life of being occasionally ridden.. :)

Definitely not! My horses love to go on rides, and will run to me when called. If they didn't love their work I hardly think they would be so enthusiastic. I have heard some animal right extremists say those kinds of things before, but don't pay them any mind.

I'm a vegetarian, and i do not think at all that horseback riding is cruel. Only some people "meanly ride" there horses. They shouldn't judge so quickly. Sorry but some veggies are out there! (But were cool :D)
