I can't ever remember hearing a shortened version of Wolfgang .. but I do know someone that went by their middle name at school and stuff. Only his family and close friends called him Wolfgang.
I personally don't like 'Wolfie' - sounds too much like my neighbor's name for her Huskey.

My husband is Austrian and his cousin's name is Wolfgang (it is a pretty common name here). We call him Wolfi.
In German, they usually don't use an "ie" or "y" ending like we do when we want to shorten something. Common nicknames are Wolfi (for Wolfgang), Klausi (for Klaus), Rudi (for Rudolf), Lisi (for Lisa), Dani (for Daniela), etc. You see where I am going..
Good luck!

Wolfgang Van Halen goes by Wolfie, so I'd go with that.
