Hiya all, just wondered what the general feeling was... Watched a program tonight about the Titanic, the theory was that it was actually the Ships sister - the Olympic that sank... it was an insurance fraud as the Olympic was un-insurable.... What do you guys think?

Hi God, I dunno, they said on the program that they switched the ships, using Olympic but dressing it up as Titanic.. an explosion along with the iceberg caused the ship to sink, I find it all very interesting, but dont know enough to give a learned opinion, - thisisme - ur answer was so informative x

At first, the evidence points to the theory being bunkum, but then looking deeper...

1) Olympic's central turbine could run on steam from only one reciprocating engine. After her collision with HMS Hawke, the starboard (?) engine room flooded but the port one was still operable. Olympic limped back to Belfast on one engine. Why? Why allow exhaust steam to go to waste, not an economical move considering White Star's financial status, when the central turbine could still use that steam?

2) When Olympic finally reached Belfast, having spent two weeks on Southampton being patched up for the trip, it was discovered that the patch, a heavy-duty thing of concrete, steels and timber, had breached. Why should this happen? It should only happen if the ships' back is broken, in which case the ship is a write-off.

3) Olympic lost a propellor blade on a later trip and again had to return to Belfast. The replacement should have been a job that lasted a day. It took a week. Why?

4) The '401' test. Titanic's starboard propellor was allegedly embossed with her build number, 401. On the wreck, the starboard propellor apparently shows this 401 number. But Olympic was given Titanic's starboard propellor after her collision with Hawke, and Titanic given a spare that had no number. Thus proving the ship with the '401' propellor lying on the bottom of the Atlantic must be Olympic.

5) Olympic was painted white for her launch in 1910, this paint later covered by White Star colours (black hull, white superstructure.) Titanic for her launch was already painted in White Star colours, and there is no evidence for her ever baing painted white. So why on the wreck are there patches of what appears to be white paint showing through the White Star colours?

6) One of Titanic's officers wrote to his sister, two days after joining Titanic, that he 'still didn't like this ship'... still? Incidentally, he was also an officer on the Olympic at the time of the Hawke incident.

7) On the Titanic for her maiden voyage were the Commodore of the Line, Captain Smith, and the First officer of the Olympic (Murdoch, I think). At the same time, Olympic was given two officers inexperienced in the handling of the Olympic class liner for her Captain and First Officer. This invited disaster to Olympic, and begs the question why was Murdoch drafted to Titanic when he could have been of more use to Olympic's master, Haddock?

8) Why was Thomas Andrews, designer of Titanic and Managing Director of Harland and Wolff, on board for the voyage? The presence of him, and the two officers mentioned above, seems to suggest something was expected to go wrong...

9) Why were Titanic's sea trials so short? Olympic's took two days, Titanic's were limited to a short 6 hours steaming.

10) Olympic's anti-electrical static paint on the base of her bridge instrunments was white, and Titanic's was red. So why is there white lead paint around the base of Titanic's telemotor, the last bridge instrument in place on the wreck itself?

11) Why, in the middle of a coal strike, was the Californian ordered to sea in such a rush that her wireless officer didn't have time to get Marconi charts for the North Atlantic? If her cargo was so important, why did she stop when she reached the ice field? Surely if there was that much haste she would have steamed on regardless like Titanic had.

12) The letters of the name were supposed to be engraved in the steel hull and then filled with gold paint. When a Russian submarine tried to scrape off the rust to find the name, it was found that in fact the letters had been bolted on. Over time the bolts had rusted and the letters fallen to the sea floor, leaving just an outline of the letter. Intriguingly though, below this outline were the engraved letters 'M' and 'P'. There is no 'M' or 'P' in Titanic.

I'm open-minded about the possibility of a switch, but after almost a century I don't see why there should still be a cover up if indeed there was one.

Totally untrue. The Titanic sank due to bad judgment on the part of the crew and the arrogance of Bruce Ismay, son of the owner of the White Star line and a real jerk. It was he who harrassed and encouraged Capt Smith to exceed safe speed limits in order to get to NY as fast as possible. It was also he who dressed as a woman in order to secure a seat...leaving many women and children to drown.
The inaction of the nearby SS California, Capt Stanley Lord, also contributed to many deaths. His ship was within 6 miles or so and could have saved many, if not all, lives but he chose instead to remain safe and warm in his bed.
Then the Titanic crew, namely the watch, misplaced the binoculars and thus were unable to see the iceberg until they were almost on top of it. Further complicating things was the fact that the seas were incredibly calm, thus no waves broke around the iceberg which would have made it more visible.
The decision to turn the wheel hard astern doomed the ship; (enabling the berg to scrape and rip the entire side of the ship)long enough for help to arrive.
An inherent flaw in the ship design was the wateright compartments, which were, in fact, not watertight at all, but similar to an ice cube tray, no closure on top thus when one comprtment filled up, it slopped over into the next one and so on. If the tops had been capped and truly watertight the ship could have stayed afloat.
Last but not least, the total inexperience of Capr Smith who, in all his years at sea, had never had any close calls or any problems thus rendring him totally helpless when the maritime disaster of all time hit his ship.

Well, we know that the Titanic was built, it was witnessed leaving on its maiden voyage and filmed, we know that it never arrived in America so it must have sunk, 1500 people died leaving about 700 survivors or as I would have it 700 witnesses to the fact that it was the Titanic, what do you think?.

Both Titanic and Olympic have sunk. The Olympic wreck has been largely salvaged and the account of this work has been published. Titanic has not so far, been salvaged to any extent.

Apparently, the port-holes were slightly different in both ships.
When the ship was photographed, after the sinking, they discovered that the plans for that port-hole dimensions were for the OLYMPIC???????
