Well, that day is a special day. I quote my source. "The Sun will sit precisely on the heavenly crossroads between the Milky Way and the galactic equinox".

Strange facts surround this. There is evidence that the myans predicted all solar eclipses to this day. They also predicted when they would be overrun by foriegners. Legend says they also predicted the world wars.

(If you are worrying, the sun has already been in this position more than 150,000 times already)

They didn't predict that the world would end; rather, the design of their calendar is such that it cycles back to 0 on 12 Dec 2012 (according to our calendar).

Don't read more into such things than are really there.

Its it the end of a precession cycle for the Earth which lasts about 26,000 years. I guess they thought it was going to be the end of it all.
